An expert has claimed that hotel chains should resist the urge to discount their rooms in the current economic climate. Marvin Rust, hospitality partner at Deloitte, said he is "not a big fan" of such a move as companies should work harder to make their offerings more attractive to visitors in other ways. He explained that companies may do this by offering deals in relation to events or attractions, as well as their reputation for quality food or spa facilities. "People could be encouraged to stay longer through three-for-two nights which is not discounting but effectively giving a room for additional night free of charge," he added. Recent figures from Deloitte found that UK cities experienced an average decline of nine per cent in revenue per available room (revPAR) during the first three months of this year. Glasgow was found to buck the trend for relatively high falls, experiencing a revPAR drop of just 1.7 per cent.
