New research has revealed that despite the economic downturn, UK hotel chain managers are confident about the next few months. The latest Confidence Monitor report from TRI Hospitality Consulting found that 39 per cent of respondents were optimistic or very optimistic about the second quarter of 2009. It was also revealed that managers regard marketing as key during the coming months, as around 70 per cent have either increased or maintained their promotional budgets. David Bailey, deputy managing director of TRI, said: "There are tentative signs that confidence levels are rising as operators adapt and get to grips with the recession and also find themselves three months nearer to recovery. He added that there is a "small but significant proportion of operators" who expect to achieve occupancy growth over the next few months. Marvin Rust, hospitality partner at Deloitte, recently urged hotel chains not to discount in the current climate and instead called on them to attract visitors in other ways.
